Darren and great pal Lee Westwood have struck a unique bet ahead of the 2014 majors which began with the Masters at Augusta last week.
The Ryder Cup legends have added some spice to the major championships in 2014 by agreeing to a Par 3 challenge that could see the winner’s chosen charity net in excess of £25,000, courtesy of sponsors Dunlop.
The wager compares Darren and Lee’s average score on Par 3s throughout the Masters, US Open and Open Championship. The lowest average score over the three tournaments will receive a £10,000 charity cheque, with further bonuses of £250 per birdie and a whopping £10,000 for a hole in one.
Not content with a potential charity windfall, the pair have upped the stakes further by shaking hands on a fashion forfeit. The players, who endorse Dunlop clothing only, have agreed that the golfer with the worst average will have to wear a Dunlop colour combination of the winner’s choice during the first round of the US PGA Championship.
"The bet’s a great idea," said Westwood. "We often have a little wager when we play together socially or in practice but this cranks it up a notch. Par 3s can be where a major championship is won or lost so if the threat of having Darren as my stylist helps the focus slightly, then I’m all for it."
Dunlop’s clothing collection includes flamboyant colours ranging from 'hot pink' and lime to 'electro blue' and orange, but the potential fashion forfeit is a risk Clarke thinks is worth taking.
"I’m not sure I can pull off a pair of 'hot pink' trousers but it’s a fantastic gesture from Dunlop and we’re happy to take up the challenge," said the Ulsterman. "The winner could make more than £25,000 for their chosen charity so we weren’t going to let a few bright colours put us off."
Clarke and Westwood both enjoy a unique, clothing-only sponsorship deal with Dunlop, whereby their agreement with the leading golf brand also stipulates that they receive a £2 million bonus for every major championship victory.
"Our sponsorship of Darren and Lee has always been famous for its originality and innovation" said David Newbury, Dunlop’s head of marketing. "Our £2 million bonus deal with each player shows how committed we are to sharing in their success and this charity bet is just another initiative to help support our partnership with two of Europe’s greatest ever players."
